Omega-3 byproduct oil could fully replace fish oil in European seabass feeds, study finds

A peer-reviewed study by researchers from the University of Porto, CIIMAR, and the University of Florence, in collaboration with EPAX®, found that fatty acid ethyl ester (FAEE) oil — a byproduct of omega-3 supplement production — can completely replace fish oil in juvenile European seabass diets without impairing growth, feed utilization, or nutrient digestibility. However, the substitution significantly reduced muscle DHA levels, pointing to a potential nutritional quality trade-off that may require mitigation.

UK 2026 Cereal Harvest Closes Below Average as Dry Weather Hits Wheat and Barley

The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board's final assessment of the UK's 2026 cereal harvest shows winter wheat averaging 6.9 t/ha — about 11% below the five-year average — while spring barley and oats also fell well short of benchmarks. Oilseed rape was the sole standout crop, yielding roughly 19% above its five-year average. AHDB warns that some arable farmers are now facing a second or third successive difficult harvest.

Innovafeed and Protix publish white paper calling for dynamic assessment of insect ingredients in aquafeed

France-based Innovafeed and Dutch company Protix have jointly published a white paper arguing that current life cycle assessments of insect-derived feed ingredients rely on outdated pilot-scale data and fail to capture real-world sustainability gains already achieved at industrial scale, including a reduction in Innovafeed's carbon intensity by a factor of five since 2022.

Aquaculture Expansion Could Direct Up to 46% of Wild Fish Catches to Feed by 2040, Report Warns

A report by the Changing Markets Foundation, produced with University of British Columbia researchers, warns that wild-caught fish used for aquaculture feed could rise sharply by 2040 if growth concentrates in carnivorous species such as salmon, shrimp, sea bream and sea bass. The FAO has disputed the interpretation of a 75% growth figure cited in the report, and the findings have sharpened debate over species choice, feed composition, and the impact on small-scale fishing communities.

ICE Enforcement Operations in Southwest Kansas Disrupt U.S. Beef Supply Chain, Cattle Groups Warn

Immigration enforcement operations in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas have cut federally inspected cattle slaughter by more than 31,000 head versus the prior week through Thursday, September 25, 2026, with the Kansas Livestock Association, Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association and Texas Cattle Feeders Association warning of millions of dollars in lost revenue and delays to fed cattle deliveries. The disruption is affecting feedyards, processing plants, feed and grain businesses and transport operations across a region that accounts for roughly 22% of the nation's grain-fed beef supply.

EFSA Calls for Stronger Biosecurity as Autumn Bird Flu Season Threatens Poultry Supply Chains

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the European Commission have renewed their joint #NoBirdFlu campaign ahead of the autumn migration season, urging farm-level biosecurity improvements to reduce avian influenza risks. Nearly 8,000 outbreaks were detected in Europe between October 2025 and June 2026, with supply chain disruption a growing concern for feed and food manufacturers relying on egg-derived ingredients.
