USDA's August WASDE cut the 2021 U.S. corn yield to 174.6 bushels per acre, about 1.1 bushels below the lowest trade guess, lowering production to 14.75 billion bushels. Soybean yields were trimmed 0.8 bushel per acre, and wheat and Russian, Canadian and EU production estimates were also reduced.
Corn futures rose about 5% shortly after the release.
A tighter U.S. corn supply and 2021/22 stocks near 8.5% of use support higher corn prices, and the cuts to major wheat exporters may constrict global trade flows.
