Wheat futures rallied after private analyst Informa cut its 2017 US winter wheat planting estimate to 33.76m acres from 35.42m. Speculators held a near-record short position, which triggered short-covering.
The USDA had also trimmed its 2016-17 soybean crush estimate, and soymeal exports were running ahead of expectations.
Lower expected US winter wheat plantings support new-crop wheat prices. Stronger soymeal exports and crush demand support soybean and soymeal prices, which tightens feed protein supply.
