Rabobank analysts say a potential EU ban on palm oil in biodiesel would require Indonesia and Malaysia to find up to 2.6 million tonnes of alternative export markets. The EU Parliament voted in January 2018 for a ban from 2021, but the measure is not yet final and still needs trilogue negotiations.
Palm oil accounts for about 27% of EU biodiesel feedstock, so a ban would shift demand toward soybean and rapeseed oil. That would support soy and rapeseed oil prices while pressuring palm oil.
