Malaysian palm oil futures fell 2.9% to 3,744 ringgit a tonne for November delivery as stocks rose. Malaysia kept its October crude palm oil export tax at 8% but raised the reference price, which increases the effective tax payable, while Indonesia lowered its reference price for the second half of September.
A higher effective Malaysian export tax raises the cost of Malaysian palm oil relative to Indonesian supply, while high stocks in both countries add bearish pressure. Palm needs a wider discount to soyoil and sunoil to attract buyers.
After 400 past bearish policy events, PALMOIL moved a median -0.0% over 5 sessions (49% higher; middle half -1.3% to +1.1%), and +0.2% over 20.
After 196 past neutral policy events, SBO moved a median +0.1% over 5 sessions (52% higher; middle half -1.6% to +2.0%), and -0.5% over 20.
