The USDA confirmed a New World screwworm infestation in a household dog in Cochise County, Arizona, on October 28, making Arizona the third U.S. state with cases after Texas and New Mexico. The Arizona Department of Agriculture said a local veterinarian found the wound on October 26, and USDA laboratory testing confirmed the case.
USDA counts reported 71 cases nationwide since June, with 18 active.
Screwworm spreading into a new state raises the risk of movement restrictions on US cattle and feeder cattle, tightening live cattle supply and supporting prices for beef and feed demand. The westward spread into the border region keeps the market sensitive to further restrictions on Mexican cattle imports.
