USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins announced a $100 million New World Screwworm Grand Challenge to spur detection, containment and eradication technology. The parasite has moved north through Central America and Mexico and is reported about 70 miles from the Texas border, with active cases in Tamaulipas.
APHIS will administer the fund, with applications due February 23, 2026.
A screwworm incursion into the US would threaten cattle movement and herd size, tightening live and feeder cattle supplies and supporting prices. Border restrictions on Mexican cattle would also reduce feeder supply.
