A new weather monitoring system is being introduced to improve drought forecasting in Central America, following the 2015-2016 drought that decimated harvests. The FAO says the tool combines land-use maps and crop calendars to target low-rainfall areas.
The system is a regional early-warning tool with no immediate supply effect, so it has negligible impact on global grain or feed prices.
