Strategy Grains, a French grain analyst, forecasts the EU-28 2019 grain harvest at 311 million tonnes, up 11% from 279 million in 2018 and the largest since 2015. The increase reflects higher yields and about 6% more acreage after drought and heat hit 2018 crops in Central and Northern Europe.
Rapeseed output is expected to fall on smaller acreage.
A much larger EU crop in 2019 would add supply to world wheat and barley markets and could weigh on export prices, though the analyst expects the EU to stay uncompetitive abroad for now. Lower EU rapeseed output supports rapeseed meal and oil prices.
