Missouri Governor Michael Parson wrote to federal officials supporting lower Mississippi River dredging to deepen the channel for larger Panamax loads. The Missouri Soybean Association and the United Soybean Board estimate deeper channels could add $461 million a year in farm revenue, up to 13 cents per bushel of soybeans.
Deeper channel depths would allow larger vessel loads and lower freight costs for soybean and corn exports, supporting farm-gate basis. Benefits depend on future federal funding and are not immediate.
