The USDA will start a phased reopening of Mexican cattle imports on August 24 at Douglas, Arizona, after a yearlong ban tied to New World screwworm. Every imported animal will be inspected, and additional New Mexico ports will reopen later.
The move is intended to ease record beef prices and a historic cattle shortage.
Imports of up to 80,000 head per month would add to scarce feeder supply, pressuring cattle futures while packers gain relief on input costs.
