The USDA plans to reopen the border to Mexican cattle imports on August 24, starting at the Douglas, Arizona crossing near Agua Prieta, Sonora. The suspension had lasted more than a year because of the New World screwworm outbreak.
Reopening will follow enhanced inspection protocols agreed in bilateral talks.
Resumed Mexican feeder cattle imports add supply to the US feeder market, which is likely to pressure feeder cattle prices. The move also signals easing of the screwworm-related import restrictions.
