DAT's September report showed national average spot rates rising across all equipment types, with reefer spot hitting an all-time monthly record of $3.62 a mile. Fuel surcharges set new highs of 84 cents for vans, 92 cents for reefers and $1.01 for flatbeds, as diesel averaged $6.291 a gallon.
Much of the freight increase reflects fuel costs passed through surcharges, so higher diesel raises the delivered cost of feed moved by truck. Reefer strength signals tight refrigerated capacity.
After 113 past bullish logistics events, DIESEL moved a median +0.6% over 5 sessions (54% higher; middle half -2.8% to +4.2%), and +0.2% over 20.
