USDA's quarterly Grain Transportation Report shows third-quarter 2026 grain volumes stayed high across rail, barge and ocean modes. Freight rates are rising largely because of sustained fuel cost increases, with the U.S. average diesel price hitting a record $6.529 per gallon in late September.
Higher freight costs widen the basis and raise landed feed costs for buyers far from production, while strong volumes keep transport capacity tight. Elevated diesel also feeds into delivered prices for corn, soybeans and meal.
