India ordered a ban on exports of non-basmati white rice, its largest rice export category, after retail rice prices rose and late monsoon rains damaged crops. The category accounted for about 10 million tons of the country's 22 million tons of rice exports last year, roughly halving shipments by the world's largest exporter.
Parboiled rice was excluded from the ban.
India supplies over 40 percent of world rice exports, and with low inventories elsewhere this cut is likely to sharply lift global rice prices. Higher rice costs could also push buyers toward substitute feed grains such as corn and sorghum.
After 168 past bullish policy events, RICE moved a median +0.8% over 5 sessions (57% higher; middle half -1.7% to +2.1%), and -0.4% over 20.
