BMI, the Fitch Solutions research unit, projects global rice prices to rise nearly 18 percent on average in 2027 as a strong El Niño threatens harvests in Asia. It forecasts CBOT rough rice futures averaging $16.50/cwt in 2027, up from $14 this year, and raised its 2026 forecast to $12.90 from earlier levels.
Rice futures hit a 29-month high of $17.80 in October.
Expected output declines in India and Thailand, with global production forecast down 1.4 percent, tighten supply and support higher rice prices. Rough rice and rice-linked feed inputs such as broken rice and DDGS-substitute grains could firm as buyers hedge the El Niño risk.
After 179 past bullish weather events, Rough Rice moved a median +0.4% over 5 sessions (55% higher; middle half -1.4% to +2.5%), and +2.2% over 20.
