China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs issued a revised plan for managing hog production capacity, setting the normal national inventory target for breeding sows at about 37.5 million, lower than the February 2024 target. The plan tightens the upper and lower limits of the green and yellow inventory bands and adds tiered capacity controls to help balance supply and demand.
A lower breeding-sow target could restrain future hog production and support hog prices if implemented. The effect depends on how quickly producers adjust sow inventories.
