A farmers’ cooperative in Otuke, Uganda, is asking the government to connect its milling facility to the national electricity grid because high diesel costs are making rice, millet, and sorghum processing expensive. It spends about 28 million shillings annually on generator fuel, and rice hulling charges have risen from 150 to 250 shillings per kilogram.
High diesel costs raise the expense of processing and marketing local grains, reducing farmer margins and potentially making milled products less affordable. A grid connection could ease those costs, but it has not yet been secured.
