The head of Mexico’s National Union of Agricultural Workers said the removal of about 24 agricultural and rural support programs has left small and midsize producers short of credit, technical subsidies, and marketing support. He said Mexico produces only 42% of its grains and oilseeds, while imports of grains, oilseeds, and derivatives rose by 1.8 million tonnes in the first nine months of 2026; corn imports are projected to reach nearly 26.5 million tonnes in 2027, up from 25.6 million in 2026.
Reduced producer support may constrain domestic output and increase reliance on imports, supporting demand for imported feed grains and oilseeds. The projected increase in corn imports is particularly supportive for corn demand.
