Texas A&M researchers are studying the genetic makeup of New World screwworm with $4 million in USDA funding over two years. They will analyze thousands of specimens from the ongoing outbreak in Honduras to track spread and assess possible treatment resistance.
The parasite reached the United States in June 2026.
The research aims to improve control of a livestock pest that threatens cattle supply, but it has no immediate effect on feed or commodity supply and demand. Any resistance findings could eventually affect livestock losses and herd management costs.
