Nicaragua notified the WOAH of its first confirmed New World screwworm detection since 1996, reported April 29, 2024, with the outbreak traced to illegal animal movement. The government declared a national health emergency by decree on April 3 and launched a national control campaign.
Nicaragua has about 6 million cattle and nearly $1 billion in annual beef, dairy and live animal exports.
Screwworm outbreaks can cut herd numbers and trigger animal-movement restrictions and export disruption, tightening regional cattle and beef supply. Treatment that withdraws dairy cattle from milk supply could also modestly affect milk availability in the region.
