New World screwworm cases in Southern New Mexico have tripled in recent days, with 20 new cases identified across Doña Ana, Grant, Luna, Otero, Hidalgo and Catron counties, bringing the state total to 30 since June. The New Mexico Department of Agriculture expanded the infested zone to cover all of five counties and parts of several others, requiring inspection and treatment before animals are moved.
Movement restrictions on cattle and other livestock in the affected zone can tighten feeder cattle supply and disrupt shipments, adding support to cattle prices. Spread to new areas also raises the risk of further US import or movement restrictions.
