Mexico's SENASICA confirmed a New World screwworm case in Sabinas Hidalgo, Nuevo León, about 70 miles from the U.S. border, the northernmost detection of the outbreak. The infected 8-month-old cow had been moved to a certified feedlot from southern Mexico.
USDA Secretary Rollins said the U.S. would act unilaterally to protect its borders.
A detection this close to the border raises the risk of a further closure of Mexican cattle imports, which would tighten U.S. feeder and fed cattle supplies and support prices.
