The Dalian Commodity Exchange released China's first official lean meat pork price index on March 24. It is calculated from 89 large pork processors across 16 regions, representing 32% of national supply, and will underpin future hog futures contracts.
The index is a step toward hog futures and government monitoring of the pig cycle, which could dampen extreme domestic price swings and change the timing of Chinese import demand.
