Informa Agribusiness Intelligence forecasts soybean oil prices could rise sharply in 2018 if the US imposes countervailing and antidumping duties on biodiesel from Argentina and Indonesia. US biodiesel imports reached 677 million gallons in 2016, and tariffs would force domestic production to rise to meet EPA volume requirements.
Duties on subsidized biodiesel imports would cut import supply and lift soybean oil demand from domestic producers, with knock-on support for palm and canola oil as substitute feedstocks. The effect depends on the final duty rates, which remain undecided.
