China and Hong Kong pork imports have moderated from record 2016 levels as China's domestic hog production rebounded and its hog prices cooled. May imports were down 15% year-over-year including Hong Kong, and muscle-cut imports fell 27%, while Jan-May totals were up 7%.
Imports are projected to finish 2017 about 4% below last year's record.
Lower Chinese import demand reduces outlets for global pork and weakens export pull on US hog prices. A possible seasonal rally in China later in the year could partly offset this.
