USDA Midwest Climate Hub reports that the Midwest's specialty crops, including fruits, vegetables, tree nuts and nursery crops, face growing risk from shifting weather and climate change. Temperatures in the region rose more than 1.5°F from 1900 to 2010, and early warm spells followed by frost can damage tree fruits.
These crops also have more limited crop insurance coverage than row crops.
The impact is mainly on specialty crops with little direct link to feed grain or oilseed supplies, so price effects for feed buyers are minimal.
