African swine fever has been reported in four Chinese provinces (Liaoning, Henan, Jiangsu and Zhejiang) since August 1. Chinese soybean futures fell as much as 1.8% to their lowest in nearly 10 years, and rapeseed meal futures dropped 3.2%, amid already weak demand from a record US crop forecast.
ASF threatens Chinese hog herds and therefore reduces demand for soybean meal and rapeseed meal used in pig feed. Lower hog numbers would weigh on meal demand and push Chinese meal prices down, with knock-on pressure on global protein meal markets.
After 167 past bearish disease events, Soybean Meal moved a median -0.6% over 5 sessions (40% higher; middle half -1.8% to +1.4%), and -0.8% over 20.
