A USDA report dated September 4 shows Chinese soybean meal consumption falling to a four-year low as African swine fever shrinks the hog herd. Chinese soybean imports are expected to hit a five-year low in September-October, with U.S. soybean imports under a quarter of last year's levels.
Lower Chinese soymeal and soybean demand is bearish for world soybean and soymeal prices, especially for U.S. exporters. Broiler growth only partly offsets the hog losses.
After 167 past bearish disease events, Soybean Meal moved a median -0.6% over 5 sessions (40% higher; middle half -1.8% to +1.4%), and -0.8% over 20.
