India's cabinet approved nutrient-based subsidy rates for phosphatic and potassic fertilizers for 2020-21, with expected spending of Rs 22,186.55 crore. Subsidy rates were cut for nitrogen, phosphorus, potash and sulphur compared with the prior year.
The decision was taken at a Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs meeting.
Lower Indian subsidies may dampen fertilizer demand or raise farm-level costs for phosphate and potash, a modest bearish signal for fertilizer prices in the near term.
