The Government of Canada announced C$8.7 million in National Trade Corridors Fund money for four projects to improve cargo handling in the Lower Mainland. Of that, C$7.4 million goes to three projects run by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority.
They cover container inspection technology, a rail capacity study linking CP yards to grain and container terminals, and support for the gateway collaboration forum.
The funding targets longer-term efficiency at the Port of Vancouver, a key gateway for grain and oilseed exports. It does not offset the near-term rail and congestion problems, so it has little immediate price impact.
