Safe Work Australia plans new workplace dust and chemical exposure limits, including an 80% cut to the phosphine fumigant limit and halved limits for grain dust such as oats, wheat and barley. Farmers and miners say some limits are unmeasurable and that phosphine could become unusable, prompting calls for a delay.
The agency maintains the limits reflect current science and targets implementation on December 1, 2026.
If phosphine becomes unusable, grain storage and export fumigation costs and disruption could rise, tightening physical grain handling and supporting basis and freight costs for feed grains.
