Mexico and Belize are working on a sanitary control mechanism to expand the import of cattle for immediate slaughter and terminal fattening from Belize. The current protocol allows about 5,000 certified animals a year, all from Orange Walk County.
The update would cover more certified Belizean producers, who must show clear tests for bovine tuberculosis and brucellosis and pass Mexican veterinary inspection.
A larger supply of Belizean feeder cattle would add modestly to Mexico's raw material for its feedlot and slaughter sector. The effect on world cattle and feed prices is small.
After 14 past neutral trade events, Feeder Cattle moved a median +0.1% over 5 sessions (50% higher; middle half -1.0% to +1.3%), and +1.2% over 20.
