A report by Kansas State and Oklahoma State economists, commissioned by state beef councils, estimates the impacts of halting both U.S. beef exports and imports. It finds that the two flows serve different products and markets and add value to the U.S. industry.
Exports average about 2.05 billion pounds a year at an implied price of $3.13/lb.
Losing export and import outlets would reduce demand for U.S. cattle and lower feeder and fed cattle values over time. Trade access therefore supports cattle prices.
After 65 past neutral trade events, Live Cattle moved a median +0.3% over 5 sessions (57% higher; middle half -0.5% to +1.4%), and +2.5% over 20.
After 14 past neutral trade events, Feeder Cattle moved a median +0.1% over 5 sessions (50% higher; middle half -1.0% to +1.3%), and +1.2% over 20.
