The American Petroleum Institute argues that a U.S. diesel export ban would backfire, citing a 7% one-day jump in European diesel futures after the proposal surfaced. U.S. gasoline futures also rose to their highest close since July on the same day.
The group says a refinery cannot make diesel without also producing gasoline and jet fuel, so restrictions could disrupt output.
Export restriction talk is lifting global diesel benchmarks, which raises fuel and freight costs for feed supply chains. Refinery disruption from a ban could also tighten gasoline and jet fuel markets.
After 90 past bullish policy events, ULSD / Diesel moved a median +1.4% over 5 sessions (66% higher; middle half -1.9% to +4.1%), and +0.1% over 20.
