The Borneo Post reviews how the US-China trade dispute affected Malaysian commodities in 2019. China bought 1.89 million tonnes of palm oil from January to October, up from 1.42 million a year earlier, as it shifted purchases away from US soybeans.
Palm oil prices rallied to a two-year high of RM2,850 per tonne on December 6 after falling to a four-year low in July, and the US halted new tariffs on December 13 in exchange for Chinese soybean and poultry purchase commitments.
Chinese demand for palm oil and the new US-China commitments to buy soybeans both affect vegetable oil and oilseed prices. The planned US soybean purchases could support soybean prices into 2020.
After 133 past bullish trade events, PALMOIL moved a median +0.7% over 5 sessions (64% higher; middle half -0.8% to +2.3%), and +1.7% over 20.
After 696 past bullish trade events, SOY moved a median +0.3% over 5 sessions (54% higher; middle half -1.3% to +1.9%), and +0.7% over 20.
