Ambienta acquires four aquaculture technology suppliers in platform-building push

European asset manager Ambienta has acquired Norway-based BioMarine, FLS, and Smir, plus Faroese firm GroAqua, through its Ambienta IV fund, describing the four deals as the first step toward building an integrated sustainable aquaculture technology platform.

European asset manager Ambienta has acquired four aquaculture technology suppliers — Norway-based BioMarine, Flatsetsund Engineering (FLS), and Smir, and Faroese firm GroAqua — marking what the company describes as the opening move in its ambition to become a leading provider of diversified industrial technology solutions in sustainable aquaculture.

The transactions were completed through Ambienta's Ambienta IV fund. Ambienta manages more than €4.5 billion in assets and says it focuses on companies driven by environmental megatrends whose products or services improve resource efficiency or reduce pollution. Completion of the GroAqua transaction remains subject to customary regulatory approvals, according to the company.

The four acquired businesses cover complementary segments of the aquaculture supply chain. BioMarine's portfolio spans underwater lighting, oxygenation and water circulation, environmental monitoring, and protective solutions for sea and land-based operations. FLS is best known for its Caligus-R sea lice flushing system, used alongside freshwater bath treatments on wellboats. Smir supplies waterborne feeding technology and UV-C technology for preventive sea-lice control, while GroAqua provides cameras, sensors, sludge treatment solutions, and feed barges.

Milena Torciano, partner at Ambienta, said the firm sees a fundamental role for aquaculture in global food supply. "BioMarine, FLS, Smir, and GroAqua represent exactly the kind of technology-driven businesses we look for: they solve real operational and welfare challenges for farmers today, while materially reducing the environmental footprint of the industry," she said. "Bringing them together is the first step in building a pioneering platform that will scale the technologies the sector needs to grow sustainably."

Sverre Taknes, named as chief executive of Ambienta's new aquaculture platform, said each company had established a leadership position by addressing challenges including feeding efficiency, oxygen management, sea-lice control, and biosecurity. "By bringing together complementary technologies and deep industry expertise, we are creating a platform that can address these challenges in a more integrated way, accelerate innovation and bring proven solutions to farmers at greater scale," he said.

Rúni M Hansen, executive chairman of Faroese holding company Tjaldur — an existing GroAqua shareholder that will reinvest in the business alongside Ambienta — welcomed the deal. Hansen, who also serves as board chairman of Faroese salmon farmer Bakkafrost, said: "Joining forces with Ambienta marks an exciting new chapter in this pioneering ambition to build an integrated platform delivering sustainable aquaculture technology."

Ambienta noted that aquatic animal production accounts for approximately 15% of animal protein consumed globally and described fish farming as one of the most resource-efficient sources of animal protein. The company also acknowledged that intensive aquaculture can increase disease and parasite risks, chemical treatments, mortality, and waste, and that land-based farming can generate substantial sludge and requires significant energy — factors it said underpin the investment rationale.
