USDA announced an atypical (L-type) BSE case in an 11-year-old cow found through surveillance at an Alabama livestock market. The animal was never slaughtered and did not enter the food chain.
Atypical BSE arises spontaneously rather than from contaminated feed and does not change the US negligible-risk status, so the impact on cattle and meat prices should be limited.
