Florida's Department of Agriculture confirmed a case of mad cow disease in a 6-year-old mixed-breed beef cow detected through USDA routine surveillance of cattle unfit for slaughter. The animal never entered the slaughter channels or food supply, and USDA says the form differs from classic BSE.
The atypical case did not enter the food chain, and the feed ban on mammalian protein for cattle has been in place for years, so supply and trade effects should be limited. Some buyers may still react cautiously to any BSE headline, which could briefly weigh on beef sentiment.
