The dollar strengthened on 20 March and was on track for its biggest weekly gain since the 2008 financial crisis, with the index at about 102.82. The Australian dollar jumped 3.4% and sterling rose 3.3% from a 35-year low, though analysts said the rout was not over.
Coordinated central bank rate cuts and fund injections had not calmed markets.
