President Trump announced a $19 billion farm bailout on April 17, with $16 billion in direct payments funded by $6.5 billion from Commodity Credit Corporation and $9.5 billion from CARES Act funds. The remainder covers mass purchases of dairy, meat and produce for distribution to people in need.
Direct payments support farm finances and purchases of meat and dairy create demand for those products, but the aid is not large enough to offset the broad price collapse in livestock and dairy markets.
