The FAO reported that its food price index averaged 127.4 points in August, up from 123.5 in July, with wheat prices rising 8.8% month on month on lower harvest expectations in major exporters. Maize and international rice prices declined, while vegetable oil prices rose 6.7%, and the FAO cut its 2021 world cereal harvest forecast to 2.788 billion tonnes.
Lower harvest expectations in major exporters support wheat prices, while the reduced cereal crop estimate tightens global supply. Weaker maize and rice prices offset some of the cereal index gain.
