Oklahoma State extension specialist Derrell Peel says drought and high crop prices mean beef producers face significantly higher feed costs this winter. USDA August data show alfalfa hay up 20.5% and other hay up 13.4% year over year nationally, with North Dakota alfalfa up 109.5%.
Higher hay and grain costs will raise winter feeding expenses for cow-calf and stocker operations, supporting feed ingredient prices. Drought-hit regions face the steepest hay cost increases.
