USDA NASS reported US cattle and calves on feed for slaughter totaled 11.6 million head on October 1, 2024, slightly below a year earlier. September placements were 2% below 2023 at 2.16 million head, and marketings were 2% above at 1.70 million head.
Fewer placements than marketings point to shrinking feedlot supplies, which supports fed cattle prices, though the data came in above some analyst estimates.
