USDA's Cattle on Feed report put the Aug. 1 feedlot inventory at 11.03 million head, over 2% below a year earlier.
July placements fell 9% year over year to 1.553 million head and marketings fell about 5% to 1.727 million head, as packers curbed Saturday slaughter.
Tighter feedlot supplies and slower slaughter pace reduce near-term beef output and support fed cattle prices, while the 2023 beef production forecast was trimmed slightly.
