Live and feeder cattle futures gapped higher to all-time and contract highs on Monday after USDA's Cattle on Feed and Cattle Inventory reports. The on-feed number was the lowest in eight years and July placements were the lowest in 16 years, while the cattle inventory was below July 2023 levels across major categories.
Tight cattle supplies and weak placements point to firmer feeder and fed cattle prices, which raises the cost of cattle-based feed demand and signals lower future feedlot throughput.
