Energy prices rallied on Thursday and Friday on trade optimism and new US sanctions targeting buyers of Iranian crude, including a third Chinese refinery and shadow fleet ships. West Coast refinery upsets, including a fire at Valero Benicia, pushed West Coast basis higher.
Higher refined product prices and crack spreads raise the cost of energy inputs, while sanctions tighten crude supply and support diesel and gasoline prices.
