Natural gas prices closed lower on Monday as warm weather forecasts for the coming weeks weighed on the market. December delivery settled down 7.9 cents, or 2.5%, at $3.026 per MMBtu.
Traders also expected rising storage numbers.
Warmer forecasts cut expected heating demand, and bigger storage builds leave more gas in inventory, which pressures Henry Hub prices lower. Lower gas prices also reduce the cost of gas-based power and fertilizer inputs.
After 104 past bearish weather events, Natural Gas moved a median -7.8% over 5 sessions (22% higher; middle half -14.8% to -0.8%), and -3.3% over 20.
