Italy’s temporary reduction in diesel excise duty expired on November 7 and was not renewed, restoring the standard tax rate from November 8. The expired discount was just under 4.9 cents per litre including VAT, while petrol was not affected.
The tax change is expected to raise retail diesel prices by roughly the amount of the former discount, increasing fuel costs for transport and agricultural users in Italy. The effect is domestic and policy-driven rather than a change in fuel supply.
After 90 past bullish policy events, ULSD / Diesel moved a median +1.4% over 5 sessions (66% higher; middle half -1.9% to +4.1%), and +0.1% over 20.
