U.S. border crossings reopened to Mexican feeder cattle, with more than 13,000 head entering in September—about 16% of the September 2024 volume. Crossings at Santa Teresa reopened September 24 and Columbus, New Mexico, followed October 26; trade remains well below pre-closure levels, while U.S. beef and veal imports from Mexico rose to 117% of September 2024 levels.
Reopening should gradually increase feeder-cattle supplies for U.S. feedlots, easing supply tightness and potentially weighing on feeder-cattle prices. Continued Mexican beef imports may also add to U.S. beef supplies and compete with domestically finished cattle.
